in the 90s…

I started the decade in New Hampshire and ended the decade in New York. In between, I lived in Delaware, leaving in ‘95 to start high school in Long Island.

Throughout it all, music defined and shaped the memories I have.

Early 90s: I was listening to Paula Abdul. I had recently discovered the whole BMG/Columbia House “9 CDS for 1 penny” deal and man oh man…I stocked up on cassettes because I didn’t have a CD player (didn’t get my first CD player til around 1994). Some other tapes I got: the Beach Boys greatest hits and New Kids on the Block (of course). Vanilla Ice ruled. I was so impressed my cousin knew all the words to Ice Ice Baby. Now I know all the words to Ice Ice Baby. Life has come full circle in so many ways. Also, I was in love with Amy Grant. The Heart in Motion tape oh man it was fantastic. Also of note was the guy I had a crush on in sixth grade knew all the words to “More than Words” by Extreme. Every time I hear that song I think of sitting in that classroom, because holy shit, I can remember that classroom, I can remember the teachers name and the walls and how we always used to watch film strips in that class. Why do I remember that? Other highlights…Richard Marx, MC Hammer, SIR MIX-A-LOT, Jon Bon Jovi’s Blaze of Glory. My first mix tape made from this CD player that a neighbor’s niece had. I picked songs from her CDs. Thus my introduction to Sir Mix-a-Lot. A Whole New World from Aladdin, Black Velvet by Alannah Myles, Two Princes & Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong by the Spin Doctors…

Mid 1990s…moved to Delaware and discovered “alternative” music. And this was when I first started listening to Pearl Jam. There was this awesome radio station (Y100) that played a mix of current rock and 1980s music, which was my pre-teen introduction to the 80s. The first Pearl Jam CD ever was Vs. I got it for Christmas in 1993. I started listening to Aerosmith and they were my first favorite band (replaced by Pearl Jam pretty quickly). Also, I listened to a ton of rap/hip-hop. Early Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Tupac. CLASSIC. Also, “I Wish” by Skee-lo. There was a station called Q102 that played them all. Then I moved to Long Island and started high school…

more on that later

listening to a shuffle of all my 70s music in my itunes library.
“Don’t Pull Your Love” by Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds is on now. Neil Young played a few times, and the Who. Oh, 1970s music (EXCEPT DISCO HELL NO), I love you.
(although there is some disco I like—but the majority is yuck).

Technology from the present I love: ipod (classic—not touch), tivo. Other than that…and I guess computers—d’oh. I could be living 40 years ago. Cell phone, really I think I’d be better off without. Too addicting.

I want to go hiking. And camping. Hike to camp? Yes.

Ooooh…David Bowie…Golden Years…

I woke up with this song in my head the other day. I absolutely love this song. In high school, I bought the record (the actual vinyl record) from Goodwill for 50 cents. Good stuff! I still have the record, but now I have the mp3 version on my ipod also. There are so many good songs on the album (Surrealistic Pillow). Beautiful song…

into the great wide open
under them skies of blue
into the great wide open

This is the song.

makes more more sense

So I was driving and thinking about possibilities and getting in the car and going, which has been I don’t know, an idea for a long time. Then I put my ipod on shuffle and “Untitled” by Pearl Jam (from Live on Two Legs) came out. It’s the song that goes with the thought…”Let’s get out of here, get out of here fast.” But there’s also, “with you, I could never be alone.” I love that song.

Then Present Tense by Pearl Jam came out. And out of the 7,000+ songs I have, those two came out. They were just what I needed to hear. Thanks, universe. *mwah*

Because—to expand—my thoughts of escaping were rooted in memories and nostalgia I have of a particular place and time in my life, a time that’s long since gone. I’m not there now, I am here, in the present tense.

I’ve been listening to a lot of 70s music…pop, rock, folk. I love it!
